Adoption Resources

Here are some other ways for you to find a new home for your Labrador:

Call the breeder - If you purchased your dog from a responsible breeder, they will take the dog or assist you in finding a new home.

Talk with your vet office - They may know of someone looking for a dog.

Make a flier - See the example below. Include a good color picture and post these fliers wherever you think people interested in adopting a dog might see it.

Advertise your dog - Try the following places:

Don't forget to present all of the dog's positive qualities.

You will receive calls from interested people. Ask about where the dog will live (inside or outside) and whether they have a fenced yard. If they have other animals ask for the name of their veterinarian. This is a way of insuring they will take proper medical care of the dog.

If you have doubts about a caller, you can always say you have someone coming to see the dog who may adopt it.

Take your dog to your local Petsmart adoption day and show it yourself - adoptions open to the public are usually held on Saturday morning; call your local store to be certain.

Call your county humane society - they may know of someone looking for a dog like yours. Also they may have adoption days when owners may bring their dogs to show them for adoption.

As a last resort, you can give your dog to your county humane society or animal shelter. Bear in mind that adoption rates from these facilities are very low and your dog stands a good chance of being destroyed.

Be patient. There are great people out there who can give your dog a good home but you have to look for them.

It is to your advantage to get your dog looking good when searching for placement. With Labs this usually means giving it a bath and a fresh collar. Appearance goes a long way in attracting people to your dog. Also, you should have copies of your dog's vet records with you to show the shots and treatment it has received.
